Creating your DPP.

Creating your DPP.

When implementing DPPs brands face a key decision: which carrier to use for the passport link.

The regulation does not prescribe a specific carrier but requires that data is accessible via an electronic means and meets interoperability and openness standards.

Let’s compare:

  • QR / 2D barcode: Universally supported by smartphones, cost-effective for mass items and ideal for printed labels or carton tags. However visible codes may be subject to physical copying unless backed by unique identifiers and secure backend checks.

  • NFC chip: Offers immediate tap experience, hidden integration into premium items, and harder to replicate. The trade-off is higher hardware cost and some user friction on older devices.

From an implementation viewpoint the leanest path is QR + GS1 Digital Link for all items, and supplement with NFC on flagship or luxury SKUs. Many pilot studies recommend this hybrid model.

Choosing the right carrier ensures your DPP works for customers, service-teams and recyclers alike - all while meeting the regulatory requirement of accessibility and interoperability.
